This past weekend saw Mike Farnworth the provincial NDP Leadership hopeful as the keynote speaker at the Abbotsford NDP Fundraiser. The event was held at the Langley United Steelworkers Local 2009 Hall He delivered a "powerful message" stating that "British Columbian voters have lost faith in our current provincial government". He went on to say that he has traveled all over the province and is listening to what is on people's minds. He feels that their is a strong disconnect with people in the rural areas and the Liberal government. He wants to change that. "Every British Columbian deserves a voice in this province" I will do everything I can with the NDP to help deliver that promise!
The event Master of Ceremonies was Political Science Professor from Fraser Valley University Scott Fast. He himself delivered a great message on how the Abbotsford NDP are working harder than ever to put forth the strongest challenge they have ever done in this riding.
Moe Gidda the riding president of the Abbotsford NDP welcomed the crowd of just under seventy five NDP supporters.
New elected School Trustee from the Langley Township Ceceila Reekie spoke on how proud she was to represent the Township in her new role. She went on to say that she was the first aboriginal women to represent the Township as an elected official.
Jagrup Brar the MLA from Surrey-Fleetwood spoke about how well the Abbotsford NDP was doing, recognizing the effort being put forth by the executive. He spoke on why he was supporting Mike Farnworth for the NDP Provincial Leadership and told the crowd that he and myself (David Murray) have two common bonds, social democracy and basketball (Jagrup was a great basketball player) myself coaching for over 30 years in the community.
Other politician's and dignitaries were Abbotsford School Trustee Preet Rai, Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon NDP candidate Gwen O'Mahoney. Also in attendance was the President of the United Steel Workers Local 2009 Manjit Sidhu. The President of the Provincial Abbotsford West Riding Association Mr.Baljinder Bains and Abbotsford South Provincial president Mr. Alan Deagle.
Mr.Bill Herbst and his lovely wife Lorraine stopped by before going off to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary!
Fraser Valley Labour Council President Brian Harder was the auctioneer. Many cakes and desserts were auctioned to support the riding association in Abbotsford. Brian ended the evening by presenting long-time FVLC treasurer Karen Porter a bouquet of beautiful flowers for her hard work for the Labour Council the last four years!
