Del Mastro must take electoral fraud seriously: NDP
Leslie and Dubé host public forum in Peterborough about allegations of voter suppression
PETERBOROUGH – New Democrats Megan Leslie
(Halifax) and Matthew Dubé (Chambly—Borduas) are visiting Peterborough
today to hold a forum on the recent allegations of voter suppression and
dirty tricks swirling around the Conservatives.
“It has been sad to watch local Peterborough MP Dean Del Mastro distorting the facts surrounding these serious allegations. He has even been caught more than once making false attacks on opposition parties,” said Leslie. “His behaviour is an affront to Canadians and the response from the Conservative government shakes Canadians’ faith of in our democratic institutions.”
Postmedia broke the story on February 22, 2012 in their news report that outlined Elections Canada’s investigation into alleged voter suppression efforts linked to a telecommunications company affiliated with the Conservative Party of Canada. According to reports, the scheme targeted non-Conservatives and faked calls from Elections Canada to fraudulently send voters to incorrect polling locations.
“When news of these reports surfaced, the NDP was the only party that moved swiftly to try and hold those responsible to account while also proposing practical solutions. We presented and passed a motion to strengthen the investigative powers of Elections Canada and enhance accountability for political parties and telecom companies,” said Dubé.
“It is now time for the Conservative government to take responsibility for their role and call an inquiry to finally get to the bottom of this,” concluded Leslie.
