In BC today, Stephen Harper is promising some families tax relief… four years from now.
This is exactly the sort of cynical move Stephen Harper used to denounce. In 2005, Paul Martin promised to extend childcare funding to provinces over a decade and Stephen Harper declared: "He said he's going to extend his program for $10 billion over 10 years. Why not $100 billion over 100 years? In our system, you actually have to get a mandate from the people. You can't just declare that you're going to govern for 10 years," (Vancouver Sun, December 7, 2005)
While Harper’s asking families to wait for help, the unfair harmonized sales tax is making life more expensive today. Independent studies estimate that in British Columbia, the average family can be expected to pay an extra $480 in taxes this year alone. (David Murrell PhD, Impact of HST on Ontario and British Columbia Households, Canadian Centre for Policy Studies, p.3 )
Harper keeps denying his role in pushing the harmonized sales tax but his record speaks for itself:

Harper keeps denying his role in pushing the harmonized sales tax but his record speaks for itself:
- Harper proposed the idea: “Replacing remaining provincial retail sales taxes (RSTs) with value-added taxes harmonized with the GST is another area where provinces can contribute to strengthening Canada's Tax Advantage... Provincial sales tax harmonization is the single most important step provinces with RSTs could take to improve the competitiveness of Canadian businesses.” – Federal Budget 2008, p. 97
- Harper voted for it: “This government is in favour of harmonizing sales taxes with the provinces.” – Stephen Harper, House of Commons, Feb. 1, 2011
- His MPs defended it: “It's a politically courageous decision.” – Conservative MP Dean Del Mastro, Peterborough Examiner, Mar. 27, 2009
