Michael Ignatieff stands shoulder to shoulder with the big banks
March 29, 2011
Don’t worry Bay Street, the Liberals still have your back!
Michael Ignatieff’s team came to the rescue of the big banks today, and criticized Jack Layton for proposing to make life more affordable for Canadians by capping credit card fees.
According to Michael Ignatieff, these banks need help. After all, they only made $21.58 billion in profit over the last four quarters.
What does Liberal Senator Pierrette Ringuette of New Brunswick – who has been pushing for caps on credit card fees – have to say?
"If we had regulation of credit card interest rates and fees, then we could protect Canadian consumers from these greedy bankers.”
(The Hamilton Spectator, February 28th, 2009)
And what about the head of the Competition Bureau?
"Visa and MasterCard's anti-competitive behaviour hurts businesses and consumers alike. It is particularly harmful for small and medium-sized businesses, key engines for economic growth in Canada. Without changes to the rules, merchants will continue to face high costs for credit card acceptance, while consumers, even those who use lower-cost methods of payment like debit or cash, will continue to pay higher prices."

It’s just too bad for the Liberals that donations aren’t allowed from the banks anymore, but no doubt they are very appreciative of their help today.
