Abbotsford News: Stephen Harper In Abbotsford Sunday
Posted on 29 April 2011
By Mike Archer. Prime Minister Stephen Harper will be speaking at a rally at Casacde Aerospace at 7 pm Sunday evening it was confirmed today. The rally, dubbed ‘Rally in the Valley’ represents Harper’s only visit to the riding during the campaign.
The visit is seen by some as a last ditch attempt to shore up the fortunes of incumbent Conservative candidate Ed Fast who is facing a large upsurge in popularity for the NDP in what has always been described as a ‘safe’ seat. NDP candidate Davide Murray told Today he is flattered by the attention his hard work in the riding has caused.
“We’ve been knocking on doors, meeting people and working very hard to provide the people of Abbotsford with an alternative in this riding,” said Murray.
The traditional news media’s reliance on daily polls siting the preferences of voters who have already made up their minds has lead to an apparent late campaign swing in popular support for the NDP ever since party leader Jack Layton’s performances in the nationally televised leaders debates.
.
For two years, Abbotsford has been seen by the NDP as a winnable riding and the party has devoted substantial resources and work to unseat Fast. Murray, who has worked tirelessly in the riding, says he hopes the hard work will pay off and says the decision to bring the PM to Abbotsford is a sign the NDP has made serious inroads in Abbotsford.
.
Fast won the riding with 63 percent of the vote in the last election and Murray says the response he has received throughout the campaign, sometimes knocking on as many as 150 to 200 doors per day, has been overwhelmingly positive.
