Statement by NDP Leader Nycole Turmel on National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women
December 6, 2011
Today, on this National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, my thoughts turn to 14 young women whose lives were so brutally cut short on December 6, 1989.
Twenty-two years after the massacre at l’École Polytechnique in Montréal, we are still mourning the loss of these women and we will remember them always. But this is not enough.
We must work to eliminate violence against women here in Canada. We must fight for the thousands of women who, each day, must leave their own homes to escape their abusers. We must step up our efforts to solve the cases of nearly 500 missing and murdered Aboriginal women, gone without a trace.
We must never give up the fight to end violence against women. New Democrats will continue working, every single day, towards building a country that’s safe for all Canadians.
