Statement from New Democrat Leader Nycole Turmel on Durban climate agreement
December 12, 2011
While this deal represents some progress, we are disappointed that Canada did not play a leadership role in last week’s discussions in Durban.
Unfortunately, Conservative inaction has shut Canada out of the group of nations that will make a difference in future negotiations. While the door is still open to a new climate change treaty, no legally binding emissions reductions will take place for almost a decade.
It is all the more important that the Conservatives get serious about cutting emissions here at home. The government’s current approach will get Canada only a quarter of the way to their own weak 2020 climate change targets.
While the Harper Conservatives are causing Canada to fall behind, the rest of the world is moving forward in the new energy economy. New Democrats are working to ensure Canadians have a part in that new energy economy, and don’t lose job opportunities because of Conservative inaction.
