Former UN ambassador Paul Heinbecker endorses Paul Dewar’s position on Iran
February 11th, 2012
MONTREAL – Canada’s former UN Ambassador Paul Heinbecker has endorsed NDP leadership candidate Paul Dewar’s emphasis on diplomacy, sanctions and deterrence on Iran.
"Like Paul Dewar, I do not believe we should allow ourselves to be stampeded into supporting a war based on arbitrary timelines and hyped intelligence," said Heinbecker.
During a long and distinguished foreign affairs career, Heinbecker served as Canada's Ambassador to the United Nations and as Chief Policy Advisor to then Prime Minister Brian Mulroney.
In his speech to faculty and students at McGill University, Dewar outlined his agenda for Canadian leadership in a changing world. Mr. Dewar emphasised his commitment to diplomacy and deterrence, not war, when it comes to Iran.
"We must be firm in our opposition to nuclear proliferation and in our support for the democratic aspirations of the Iranian people" said Dewar."But initiating a war would be disastrous to regional stability, trigger a damaging Iranian response, hurt people on the ground and inflate energy prices during a time of fragile global economic recovery."
