STATEMENT FROM NEW DEMOCRAT LEADER ADRIAN DIX ON THE PASSING OF JIM GREEN

February 28th, 2012
VICTORIA – New Democrat leader Adrian Dix issued the following statement regarding the passing of Jim Green:
“On behalf of New Democrats, I express deep sadness over Jim’s passing. He will be remembered and revered for his foresight and tenacity, attributes that made him one of Vancouver’s most influential leaders and greatest champions of social justice, arts and culture, and a dynamic and inclusive city.
“I was honoured to be present when Jim received the Freedom to the City Award this past Sunday.  His legacy – from helping to establish Insite, the Portland Hotel Society, the Woodwards redevelopment, and so much more – will have a lasting impact on the lives of people both in Vancouver and other cities.
“Jim was a force, and how he transformed attitudes, policies and structures is a lesson to all of us involved in municipal issues and provincial politics. We not only have the opportunity to pursue solutions that reduce marginalization and inequality in our midst, but it is central to our work. What he accomplished on behalf of some of the most disenfranchised individuals in our society is also proof positive that obstacles to progressive change can be overcome.
“The caucus and I also extend our condolences to Jim’s family. They are in our thoughts and prayers.
“As a friend, co-worker, and political ally, I will miss Jim. It is a tribute to the breadth of his legacy that so many of us feel a sense personal loss today.”
