MLA JAGRUP BRAR TO BEGIN WELFARE CHALLENGE JANUARY 1ST
MLA Jagrup Brar will start the New Year by spending a month living on welfare rate of $610. This is to cover all his expenses including housing, food, transit and personal hygiene for all of January. The experience will expose Brar to the realities of poverty and challenges navigating the welfare system – the first being that welfare offices are not open on holidays.
Come to the news conference to learn how Brar plans to start the month and what’s planned for the first week of the Welfare Challenge.
Time: 11: 00 a.m., Sunday, January 1, 2012
Place: Surrey Central Skytrain Station – west side of City Parkway, near the         bottom of the elevator.
Raise the Rates (http://www.raisetherates.org/home2.html) is a coalition of community groups that want governments to reduce poverty in British Columbia. Raise the Rates issued the Welfare Challenge to B.C. MLA’s to experience first-hand what life is like living on welfare in B.C.
