OTTAWA, ON – Today one of Canada’s most prominent labour leaders endorsed Paul Dewar for leader of the NDP. James Clancy is the National President of the 340,000-member National Union of General Employees (NUPGE), one of Canada’s largest unions. Mr. Clancy also serves as the General Vice-President of the Canadian Labour Congress and previously served as president of the 100,000-member Ontario Public Service Employees Union.
“I am proud and privileged to offer my firm support to Paul Dewar in his bid to become the next Leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party,” said James Clancy. “Paul has valuable experience as NDP Foreign Affairs Critic, he has strongly supported First Nations and working people, and has offered a real plan to create jobs and provide training opportunities for Canadians”.
NUPGE is one of Canada’s largest unions and represents workers in both the public and private service sector, including health care, educational institutions, social service agencies, arts and cultural industries, marine and banking, and the hospitality and brewery industries.
“Paul Dewar has the leadership qualities we need to lead the NDP, and our country, into the future,” said James Clancy.
Paul Dewar previously served as the Vice-President of his Elementary Teachers’ Federation and has received labour endorsements from the 50,000-member Ottawa and District Labour Council, 4 consecutive Presidents of the Manitoba Federation of Labour, and grassroots labour leaders across the country.
