New Democrats applaud IIHF initiative to halt concussion epidemic
OTTAWA – The NDP welcomes the International Ice Hockey Federation’s decision to launch a special task force to determine how to halt the epidemic of concussions plaguing the world of hockey. Numerous specialists, including physicians, former players and equipment experts as well as the National Hockey League, will look at various ways to eliminate concussions resulting from hits to the head.
Last October, the NDP once again proposed a national strategy to reduce the number of injuries in amateur and youth athletics. The plan seeks to create a national sports injury surveillance and data collection system, with respect to concussions. It would also establish substantive concussion guidelines, including a sufficient deterrent mechanism to ensure athletes are not returning to play against medical recommendations, create national training and educational standards for coaches, and institute funding guidelines to assist amateur sports organizations in implementing these protocols.
“I strongly urge the Conservative government to follow the Hockey Federation’s leadership and take action as quickly as possible by adopting the NDP strategy,” said New Democrat Sports Critic, Glenn Thibeault (Sudbury). “I think it’s clear that the rising number of professional athletes who cannot compete due to health issues is becoming a serious problem. It’s our duty to provide a safe environment where our youth can take part in their favourite sport.”
