Paul Dewar calls on fellow NDP leadership candidates to come together in London, Ontario

Paul Dewar calls on fellow NDP leadership candidates to come together in London, Ontario

January 4th, 2012
London, ON –Today Paul Dewar, MP for Ottawa Centre and NDP leadership candidate, called on all NDP leadership candidates to come together in London, Ontario to protest Electro-Motive’s (Caterpillar) decision to lock out its local employees.
Talks between CAW Local 27 and Caterpillar broke off on December 27. The talks ended after Caterpillar tabled an offer to slash wages in half, end the pension plan and cut benefits.
This action follows the 2010 purchase of Electro-Motive by Caterpillar, allowed under the Investment Canada Act. Mr. Dewar and other leadership candidates have already called for the terms of the deal to be made public and for the strengthening of this Act to protect Canadian jobs.
“There comes a time when all leadership candidates must down the gloves and come together. This is one of those times” said Paul Dewar. “We are witnessing an attack on the working people of London, Ontario and they need to see our support and solidarity”
On Friday January 6th Mr. Dewar will join local NDP MP for London-Fanshawe, Irene Mathyssen, and other London residents to picket outside of the Electro-Motive plant. In a personal note to his fellow leadership contenders, Mr. Dewar asked them to come together in London on Friday.
