January 2nd, 2012
VANCOUVER - B, C. New Democrat leader Adrian Dix released the following statement regarding the passing of civic leader, businessman and philanthropist Milton Wong.
“Like many Vancouver residents and British Columbians, I am deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Mr. Wong, who enriched our province with his entrepreneurism, philanthropy, and the initiatives he undertook to build knowledge and social justice in our province.
“His contributions to B.C. and Canada are extraordinary. We have lost a great civic leader, a role model that exemplified the best of our city and province.
“Mr. Wong built bridges between communities through his work in establishing events and places that now help define Vancouver, such as the Dragon Boat festival, the Wosk Centre for Dialogue, the Fei and Milton Wong Experimental Theatre.
“Mr. Wong was among the first business leaders to call for better relations with first nations, including the resolution of land claims, underscoring the need to address longstanding injustices.
“B.C. today is an international leader in genome research, an area that benefited from Mr. Wong’s philanthropic efforts. He was instrumental in raising millions for the BC Cancer Agency, plus funds for the UBC’s human genome sequencing project led by Nobel Laureate Dr. Michael Smith.
“Our thoughts and condolences are with Mr Wong’s wife, children grandchildren and extended family.”
