Statement by New Democrat Leader Nycole Turmel on the New Year
As we gather with friends and family to celebrate the New Year, we are compelled to look back at the year that was and think about what we’d like to see in the year ahead. 2011 has brought unique joys, challenges, and lessons to us all.
For New Democrats, it was both the best and the worst of times. We celebrated a historic victory when over four-and-a-half million Canadians voted to send 103 New Democrat MPs to Ottawa, making it the Official Opposition to Stephen Harper’s Conservative government. On a sad note, we mourned the tragic loss of our beloved leader, Jack Layton.
Looking back on 2011, New Democrats stood up for Canadians and took on the Harper government every day.
In 2012, we’ll keep standing up for Canadian families, and holding the Conservatives to account.
Tonight, many of you will be celebrating with family and friends, so I remind you to please, drink responsibly and don’t drink and drive.
On behalf of all New Democrats, I wish Canadians a happy and safe New Year!
